In order to prevent errors executing the xargs command in Linux, a variable was added and set depending on the system, BSD based (like OSX) or Linux.

Thanks for the contribution. Unfortunately, I'm still getting error on my mac (10.11)

$ make install
echo | xargs -r &>/dev/null && XARGS_OPTS="-r"
make: *** [shutdown] Error 1
