  • SQL query fix:
    • Uses SQLAlchemy's identifier_preparer.quote() for proper dialect-aware identifier quoting in SHOW COLUMNS FROM query in ingestion/src/metadata/ingestion/source/database/trino/metadata.py
  • Trino schema name handling:
    • Resolves SQL syntax error when schema names contain dots (e.g., level1.level2.level3) by properly quoting both schema and table identifiers

I've left a minor suggestion to let the dialect handle quoting of special characters and protect against SQL injection, also improving existing code.

2. Playwright Test Failures (Not Related to This PR)

The playwright-ci-postgresql (4, 6) job had 3 test failures:

  • Result: 3 failed, 574 passed (577 total)
  • Failed tests involve: DataProducts, Domains, Custom properties, Theme config, Entity pages
  • Error patterns:
    • "Target page, context or browser has been closed"
    • "element(s) not found"
    • "strict mode violation" (multiple elements found)
    • CSS/visibility assertions failing

Root Cause Analysis

Why these Playwright failures are NOT caused by this PR:

  1. Scope of changes: This PR only modifies:

    ingestion/src/metadata/ingestion/source/database/trino/metadata.py | 3 ++-
    1 file changed, 2 insertions(+), 1 deletion(-)
    
  2. Backend vs Frontend: The changes are purely in the Python backend ingestion layer for Trino database connections. The failing tests are frontend UI tests using Playwright.

  3. No logical connection: The Trino metadata ingestion logic for handling schema names with dots has no impact on:

    • UI components rendering
    • Page navigation
    • Custom property forms
    • Theme configuration
    • Entity descriptions
  4. Test patterns suggest flakiness: The errors include browser crashes ("page has been closed"), timing issues (elements not found), and strict mode violations - classic signs of flaky UI tests.

Details

Good news: The 'safe to test' label has been added and CI is running!

Two separate issues:

  1. Fixable: Python formatting - PR author action required
  2. ⚠️ Not related: Frontend test failures - likely pre-existing flaky tests or main branch issues

Recommendations

For the PR author:

  1. Fix the formatting issue:
    cd ingestion
    make py_format
    git commit -am "Fix Python formatting"
    git push

For the Playwright failures:

  • These appear to be unrelated to this PR's changes
  • Consider:
    • Re-running the Playwright tests to see if they're flaky
    • Checking if these tests are also failing on the main branch
    • Reviewing recent UI changes that might have introduced these failures

The Trino SQL fix itself (using identifier_preparer.quote()) is sound and unrelated to the UI test failures.

Code Review ✅ Approved

Clean bug fix that properly uses SQLAlchemy's identifier_preparer.quote() to handle schema names containing dots. This is the correct, dialect-aware approach for identifier quoting.
