First, my apologies for sitting on locusrobotics#9 for so long.

To get things moving, I've done three things.

  1. I merged your branch with upstream
  2. I changed the code style to be consistent with the standard roslint style
  3. I modularized out the closest point operation (based on code that I've written in the intervening time since you made the PR)

Once we get this merged, we can talk more substantially about the PR.
