Adapted from the IDL hypnotoad
Consistent with other poloida distance functions, use N_norm to normalise distances so that the parameter is independent of global mesh resolution.

I think the default poloidal spacing function should be either |
`sin` is more robust than `sqrt`, while also trying to smoothly adapt poloidal cell sizes.
