What changes were proposed in this pull request?
After applying the fix below, we can no longer create a user without a first name. In upgrade scenarios where an external user already exists with an empty first name, there is currently no way to update that user's role through the UI.

Tested and verified: existing external users with an empty first name can successfully update their roles via the UI.
