Commit 9c6f050 removes the need for a temp file, and so fixes the issue with regularly taking & releasing locks. Instead all operations are performed against an in-memory string; fixing #43. This change will also improve performance.
The other commits in this PR should have no functional impact, but just tidy up the code to make it easier to maintain.
