Vortex Build make step Error/Issue

I followed all steps to build Vortex on Ubuntu 20, however I face the error below in the step "make -s"

Out of the box, Ubuntu 20's default compiler does not have C++ 20 support which includes the #include <ranges> header. Within ramulator's CMakeLists.txt it requires set(CMAKE_CXX_STANDARD 20) which explains the incompatibility.

Specifically, it will let you know how to check and install the compatible compiler.

Since you need to upgrade to a new compiler, depending on the machine / setup you have, this could be troublesome or break other system packages.

Feel free to use the Dockerfile.dev in the project root to get a containerized environment. You can also follow the commands in this Dockerfile to upgrade your compiler since it uses an Ubuntu 20.04 base image.

The commands to use it are as follows. You should run them from the root of the vortex project cloned on your local machine. It will create a "wrapper" docker images that mounts the local path of your local vortex repo and puts you in an interactive terminal. This way all the dependencies are kept in the container's filesystem but the repo stays on your machine's file system. This is important so that you can destroy the container at your will, but the repo's files are in tact. Hence the idea of a "wrapper" container over your local file system. Build
docker build -f Dockerfile.dev -t vortex-dev .

Run
docker run --rm -it -v "$(pwd)":/root/vortex -w /root/vortex vortex-dev /bin/bash

I encourage you to ask a large language model for more information of each of these commands and flags if you are unfamiliar with what each one is doing!

Also, you can run make rather than make -s (-s just means silent) if you want to see all the output while you are debugging this issue.

Hi, Thanks for your response and support. I was able to run the docker file to use as a ready environment. However, I face a missing library error when checking dependencies on the first step. It seem even installing the missing library didn't go well ! [image: image.png]

You can download vortex-v2.2. I ran it correctly on Ubuntu 20.

git clone -b v2.2 --depth=1 --recursive https://github.com/vortexgpgpu/vortex.git vortex-2.2

Before running "./ci/toolchain_install.sh --all," update gcc; otherwise, you'll get an error when running ”#include <ranges>”.

Hi, Many thanks for the response. I will try it out. I have two questions : - What other OS does Vortex support ? Can we use RHE8 or later or Ubuntu 24 or later ? - Regarding Vortex architecture and based on the figure below where is the compilation and execution software stack on the right located. Does it run on Host machine OS within the kernel with low level drivers that interfaces to the FPGA via hardware. Or located within the FPGA system as a permetal one ? or others ? @zzulb is right, you can use v2.2 if you just want to investigate with the core vortex functionality. However it is very out of date and no longer compatible with the latest commits made on the master branch

@amohamme can you try to reshare your screenshot of the error you are getting / summarize the steps you took before hitting the error?

I'm not sure off the top of my head about RHEL8+ and Ubuntu 24.04+, but the approach I would take is start with a working container, change the base image, and see what deps need to be resolved. Besides dnf or apt packages that are pretty easy to reason about, the main bottleneck will be the precompiled vortex toolchain. You can look inside the ci folder there are the scripts that install the toolchain and deps. If the modern OS you are trying is not compatible with anything in https://github.com/vortexgpgpu/vortex/blob/master/ci/toolchain_install.sh.in specifically something from this repo then you will probably be stuck unless you rebuild these from scratch.

It seems like attaching images in email don't upload here correctly, but if you try doing so on the github website itself it might work!

In terms of host / device arch I have written about the basics here in some detail. It might lead you in the right direction, but feel free to follow up!
