installed a midi bluetooth device which was recognized by mac but apparently different enough from the straight serial connection to make a difference i.e. it did not work

yes shure, version 2 will also be open source. But currently there is nothing to share. I'm still working on refactoring (base architecture). And thank you for the willingness to contribute. I will come back to you when the refactoring is done.
