Our Silo interface is working for the moment, but it's more than a little clunky, and I suspect it's going to be a lot of work to make useful.
Making an HDF5 I/O interface would probably be fairly straightforward, but the biggest question is: how could we visualize simulation data using a polymec-specific file format? If we wanted to support Paraview and/or Visit, I'd have to investigate how to write plugins for those viewers. I'm not sure that any other software is really up to the task, but maybe that's worth investigating, too.
Getting rid of Silo would decrease the overall burden of third-party libraries, in any case.
