Hmm, the imp module has been removed in Python 3.13, and it would probably be best if StaSh would be updated, though you can probably also monkey-patch it in some way with an imp module shim in your site-packages...

This is a problem with the objc_util module; the inspect.getargspec() function has been removed since 3.11 (replaced by inspect.getfullargspec()). Both StaSH and objc_util seem to rely on deprecated / removed features.

Here, I would suggest @omz to introduce the Rubicon-ObjC to the Pythonista app. Rubicon-ObjC now has many new features (compared to objc_util) and is suitable for newer Python versions. Support for defining Objective-C classes with duplicate names has also been added, so it almost never needs to be modified to work with Pythonista.

Ole, I also want to express my deep gratitude for your work on Pythonista and Pythonisa Lab.
I am in the beta program on both Apps.
We already worked together on former beta versions.
I am working on a tracking App.

Just a short feedback.
For me, I am fine with Pythonista. Less problems or crashes as in App Store version.
I have not found any major step backwards (Details later).
With the beta of Pythonista Lab I have updated my iPad Pro 12,9 M1 with Magic Keyboard on iOS 18.3.2.
So I first have to handle with version 18.
Lab is a bit different and first I have to become familiar with the use.
Compliment for your work on both app and especially on Pythonista Lap.
I am sure you have much to do.

Huge py files are loaded now very quick in Lab. ❤️
In Pythonista I like „Highlight all“ . In Lab the selection is now directly possible, but I am not sure, if I will like it, if all the time this direct selection is available.
I am missing the possibility to navigate to all the highlighted text and the quick change.

The biggest problem for me is the missing filter system in the upper middle screen under the three dots.
And it would be nice to access the same files with Pythonista and Pythonista Lab
In Pythonista you can select a line on screen with two fingers. I am missing this on Lab.

I know, not all can solved at once.

I appreciate a feedback what you are planning to do.

@wnMark Welcome back and thanks for your feedback! The code editor in Pythonista Lab has basically nothing in common with the one in Pythonista 3 from a technical point of view (the one in Lab is based on CodeMirror, while I've used a completely custom component for previous versions of Pythonista), so yes, it's better at a lot of things (like loading larger files), but there are still some features in the old editor that I haven't implemented for the new one yet, or that work slightly differently.

Btw, you can select an entire line in Lab by triple tapping (which is also how it works across the rest of iOS).

Pythonista is a fantastic application that I have come to appreciate more and more as I use it.
I am able to develop code while caring for my wife, who cannot be left alone due to dementia.
With the rebirth of the Discussion forum suddenly feels as though a community is coming together again.

I am new to Pythonista und relatively new to Python as well (I used to develop for the web in php). As a teacher in a large german school (1.700+ students situated in Hannover) I see a lot of potential for the app for school usage and I am glad, that you, as I understand, keep up developing this great app. I have only been trying it out for 5 days now and already bought 5 copies for students at my school. I just want to express my thanks and hope it motivates you to further develop it. Some students have mixed feelings about Scratch, which is still often used in school-context to teach basic programming-principles. I do, too, due to its many limitations. Desktop-PCs are slowly vanishing in schools and even if they are there, maintaining the necessary infrastructure is still a pain in Germany. But since Corona, iPads are very widespread in German schools, and since last year it is mandatory to teach the subject "Informatik" in 9th and 10th grade - all that combined is, why I think, there is a lot of potential for Pythonista.
Python as a full scale and very widespread programming language, easy accessible on devices many students own, with Pythonista offering easy access to very light and easy-to-learn examples as well as the potential to develop very complex apps. 7 months ago I had two 10-year-old students, who asked me, if I could teach them how to program and they really didn't want Scratch, so I started out teaching them Python at our PCs (both do not have a Desktop-PC in their families) - and they were following well and are still motivated. But we wasted a lot of time, trying to install and configure the IDE on the PCs, ... now we have a ready-to-go-solution, which is accessible around the clock for the students. Again, thank you!
Over the weekend I have tried to find Tutorials and learning-Ressources but have to admit, that much of it is not fit for teaching or learning for younger students and/or beginners. I myself had (and still have) a hard time to understand some concepts, for example how to draw a simple Tic-Tac-Toe-Board in a Scene (now, that I slowly understand how to code the Node-concept in Pythonista it, it is simple - but the explainations weren't). There are some useful Youtube-Tutorials, but many lack depth with respect to underlying concepts. So, if you have any hints on good resources, I would be very thankful. I would also be willing to contribute or share anything I develop while teaching.

Your post has certainly given me some thought.
I think that children certainly respond to creating games in their coding journey.
Games have the advantage of being autonomous and self-contained, while still teaching maths, problem-solving and creativity.

I hadnt appreciated that desktop PCs were disappearing from schoolrooms, and that Ipads were replacing them in many situations.

Last year I set out to create games with Pythonista as a retirement hobby. I was an Electronics Engineer who used Python to test chips, but never did any game programming. I also found the first week using Scene confusing.

My first “game” was a conversion of a BASIC game from 1981. It is called Demolition and is as simple as it gets. Think Breakout reduced to bare essentials. Pressing the screen drops a bouncing ball to eliminate blocks. It might make a suitable starting point for some child game play. You could make challenges to improve and modify. The first one to say “it’s boring” has to suggest improvements and discuss how to implement!

Desktop PCs are not only vanishing in schools but also in homes. There is quite a number of homes without a PC in my school. We are situated in a part of town with low income and social challenges. With Smartphones and tablets and smart-TVs many just do not need a PC any more. I teach Office-Applications to 10th-graders and the majority of my course has no private access to a PC or notebook. So, to teach coding is challenging, when the only time they can code is while being in school in front of a PC or notebook. That‘s why I love it, when iPads become devices for coding and development.

@hbergman As someone who's studied "Informatik Lehramt" for a few semesters a long time ago, seeing Pythonista being used in schools always makes me very happy. :)

That said, you're right that the learning material provided with the app isn't necessarily suitable for use in schools, and it's generally more difficult to find teaching resources around Python, compared to e.g. Scratch. I don't know of anything specifically made for Pythonista, but here's a nice collection of beginner Python activities that might be usable in school (haven't checked them all, but most of these examples should work in Pythonista).

If you develop anything yourself while teaching with Pythonista, I'd love to hear about it!
