Individual Links

Here's how to make individual links open in new browser tab rather than navigating within the current tab;

• This [example](https://example.com) will open the link in the same tab
• This [example](https://example.com){target="_blank"} will open the link in a new tab

All Links

You can also set this for all of your pages by adding link-external-newwindow: true to your _quarto.yml under the format section like where you set the theme. E.g.,

format:
html:
theme:
light: [cosmo, theme.scss]
dark: [cosmo, theme-dark.scss]
code-copy: true
code-overflow: wrap
toc: true
link-external-newwindow: true

If you follow the above method, it will not change the links on the homepage of your website (index.qmd). To correct this, you can also add link-external-newwindow: true to the yaml header on the index.qmd page (example here)

You can make all external links open in new page by default by a setting in your _quarto.yaml

I was testing this method out last week for adding this setting to the yaml but couldn't get it quite right. I just tested your directions with our lab manual and it works for all links EXCEPT the ones on the home page (index.qmd). To correct this, you can also add link-external-newwindow: true to the yaml header on the index.qmd page (example here).

I will update my post to point to these directions instead of what I originally linked.
