macos support?

README says that it is "Platform agnostic" but I see no evidence for macos support, e.g. tests run only on windows and linux.

So I wondered if there is anything specific which precludes from using on OSX?

Indeed, platform agnostic means it should produce the same results regardless of the platform, as long as Python is supported.
I've added some macos github actions test.
There is one of 21 tests failing because of an exit code 68 for non existing commands (I expect 0, 1 or 2).
Not owning a mac and mac being horrible to virtualise, I cannot really diagnose this.
I just guess that somehow the exit code for missing binaries is different in Mac.

I'd need a MacOSX VM or something alike to make some tests. Any idea how to get hands on something alike ?

• my humble attempt also in Unify two largely duplicate test workflows into one and add macos into matrix of OSes #31 where I just added 68 to allowed for that call on OSX
• for test OSX instances
  • you could potentially request free virtual machine from https://www.macstadium.com/foss-program-application-2025 (we used an m1 for datalad)
  • you can establish "login" into github CI instance using https://github.com/mxschmitt/action-tmate
    • e.g. here is how @candleindark instrumented his https://github.com/datalad/datalad-registry/blob/master/.github/workflows/test.yml#L8 (search for tmate)
  • similar setup could be done on appveyor -- see e.g. https://github.com/datalad/datalad/blob/maint/.appveyor.yml

Fix itself is great, but shouldn't come with plenty of other changes in the same PR
