Repro Steps

Startup Windows system, open a terminal (Windows Terminal, Powershell, etc.) , run wsl usually leads to a slow startup.

P.S. I have applied some experimental features to .wslconfig:

Expected Behavior

WSL starts up and opens distro within seconds on typing wsl or wsl -d Ubuntu in terminal. The debug console message at normal startup behaves like:

Actual Behavior

Sometimes (especially on the first startup of WSL after the startup of Windows), terminal shows no response over 15 minutes or more after I execute wsl.exe. During this time, I tried to execute wsl-related commands like wsl -l -v in another terminal, but sadly there are no response. However, if WSL happens to startup successfully, a second startup will be fast.

I also found that the WSL debug console stucks at hv_balloon: Max. dynamic memory size: 16236 MB if this problem occurs. I am using a 32GB RAM computer and I apply no restrictions to RAM allocation to WSL, so WSL has been allocated 16GB of RAM.

I've noticed that there's an open issue (#12512) that is similar to this one, and I also noticed that LxssManager remained stopped even after the startup of distro. The problem seems to be a network issue...?

However when I checked the debug console of successful and unsuccessful cases of WSL startup, the only difference I found is the latter got stuck on hv_balloon: max, which seemed to be a memory allocation failure.

Thank you for reporting this @LiPtP0000. Based on the logs it's looking like networking configuration is taking a long time.

Can you try with:

networkingMode=NAT

or

networkingMode=none

And see if that makes a difference ?

No it doesn't always work. The first time of startup using NAT mode is pretty fast, however it stucks on the second time after reboot.

Additionally, I was using proxy in my Windows localhost to push commits to Github with ease. If the networking mode switches to NAT, the proxy configured in Windows cannot be reflected to WSL distro, which is an inconvenience for developing in WSL environment.

It is possible to configure separate proxies for both systems, but in this case, when I switch the proxy settings in Windows, WSL will not switch accordingly, which is unintuitive. Is there any more elegant way for achieving this?

And here is the WSL log when it takes nearly 1000 seconds to start (using NAT network mode). The debug console shows barely the same content as the initial problem.

Interesting, and what about networkingMode=none ? Does WSL start at a normal speed with this setting ?

If not, could you collect logs for that scenario as well ?
