[Feature Request] Is it possible to save and load individual Sequences into VMPC2000XL that are not .MID files (and a possible bug)

If a user saves an individual sequence (which is saved as either a .MID 0 or .MID 1 file) and attempts to load that sequence back into VMPC2000XL a crash occurs.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE

Operating system: MacOS Monterey 12.4.

VMPC2000XL version: VMPC2000XL v0.9.0.23, Built: Tue, 10 Feb 2026 16:45:07, Started: Thu Feb 12 22:32:01 2026

Steps to reproduce:

1. Launch VMPC2000XL Standalone.

2. Load an .ALL file and .PGM.

3. Create a sequence.

4. In VMPC2000XL go to MAIN SCREEN > SAVE > Scroll to: Save a sequence.

5. Save the individual Sequence. A pop up window will ask if the user would like to save the format as a .MID file: either as a Type 0 or Type 1.

6. In VMPC2000XL go to MAIN SCREEN > LOAD > Scroll to: > .SEQ. Find the sequence and load it.

7. See if by loading the .SEQ a crash occurs.

The real MPC2000XL supports loading .SEQ files, but not saving them. They're a format from the MPC60 and MPC3000. I never got to implementing .SEQ loading. If that's what you'd like, you're the first to request this feature, and I might work on it. Please confirm. Also let me know if you're talking about the 60 or 3000 flavor of .SEQ. I did reverse engineer v3 .SEQ files of the MPC3000, but I never integrated this file format into VMPC2000XL.

I'm slightly confused by your report though. You've mentioned saving a .MID file, and then loading a .SEQ file. You also mentioned a crash when you load a .SEQ file, but the code is such that pressing F6 in the LOAD screen while a .SEQ is selected has no effect. Are you actually experiencing a crash?

I wasn't aware an MPC2000XL does not save .SEQ files; it only it loads them. I attempted to load a ".MID" file, thinking it was .SEQ file. As you correctly affirmed, .MID files can be saved (I could load them into Logic Pro X.) I also wasn't aware the ".SEQ" file was indeed a .MID file, or that:

I'm confused about what you mean by loading a SEQ file. VMPC2000XL has no code path to load a SEQ file. It ignores files with the .SEQ extension when you try to load them. Are you renaming SEQ files to MID first and then load those and that's what makes VMPC2000XL crash?

SEQ files are not MID files or vice versa. It's like PNG and JPG, they are completely different file formats, and at the moment VMPC2000XL does not support SEQ.

Apologies for the confusion. I am now aware there is no .SEQ saving feature, and that (if I'm reasoning this correctly) both MPC2000XL and VMPC2000XL save .MID files instead. An MPC2000XL (I am presuming) can load .SEQ files (which are completely different to .MID files.)

If so, the crash I am experiencing is when I attempt to load (what I am presuming) is actually a .MID file (saved within VMPC2000XL itself.) In VMPC2000XL, the file in question presents itself as [filename].SEQ.

Yes.

In VMPC2000XL > Go to MAIN SCREEN > LOAD > and scrolling to View:Seq and loading [filename].SEQ that the crash occurs.
In the following order:

1. Does the problem occur if you don't first load the ALL file and do not auto-load previous state? Here too it's possible that a corrupted ALL file breaks all kinds of things in mysterious ways. See Any sequences after Seq-07 will not save #313 (comment).
2. If the problem still occurs even from a clean slate, can you attach the .SEQ file that causes the crash? If you don't want it public, you know where to find me via email.

With regard to the SEQ file version format, there are different versions. I don't know which ones, but I suspect at least 3, because I have reverse engineered v3 SEQ files that came from the MPC3000. In any case, if you would like to have SEQ support, I would need to know which specific version you need.
