Investigated — posted findings on #3883. Summary: requests/responses/webhooks enabled flags are honored in both Valibot and Zod (same gates in shared/operation.ts and shared/webhook.ts). But definitions.enabled and the request sub-flags (requests.body/headers/path/query.enabled) are never read — the parameter/requestBody/schema IR cases in valibot/v1/plugin.ts and zod/{v3,v4,mini}/plugin.ts call processor.process(...) unconditionally. That's the bug, and Zod has it too.

Investigated. Short answer: we partially honor these flags. requests, responses, and webhooks are respected, but definitions: false is silently ignored — that's the bug behind the reproduction. Zod has the exact same shape.

What the config resolves to

In packages/openapi-ts/src/plugins/valibot/config.ts:17-121, every top-level option goes through context.valueToObject(...) with the shared mappers.boolean = (enabled) => ({ enabled }) (packages/shared/src/plugins/shared/utils/config.ts:26). So requests: false becomes { enabled: false, body: {...}, headers: {...}, path: {...}, query: {...}, shouldExtract, name, case }, with sub-options keeping their default enabled: true. Same for responses, webhooks, definitions. Parsing is fine.

Which enabled flags are actually honored

Grep for \.enabled against both plugins shows the same five gates in each (packages/openapi-ts/src/plugins/{valibot,zod}/shared/operation.ts:17,87, shared/webhook.ts:16, api.ts):

• plugin.config.requests.enabled — operation walker gates request body/headers/path/query emission
• plugin.config.responses.enabled — operation walker gates response emission
• plugin.config.webhooks.enabled — webhook walker gates webhook emission
• plugin.config.requests.enabled (again) — api.createRequestSchema / createRequestValidator short-circuit so SDK callers don't pull in disabled schemas

Everything else — definitions.enabled, requests.body.enabled, requests.headers.enabled, requests.path.enabled, requests.query.enabled — is not consulted anywhere. rg 'definitions\.enabled|requests\.(body|headers|path|query)\.enabled' across the plugins directory returns zero hits.

Why definitions: false doesn't work

packages/openapi-ts/src/plugins/valibot/v1/plugin.ts:16-76 iterates IR events 'operation' | 'parameter' | 'requestBody' | 'schema' | 'webhook'. For parameter, requestBody, and schema, it calls processor.process(...) unconditionally with naming: plugin.config.definitions. There is no if (plugin.config.definitions.enabled) gate. Zod is structurally identical — see zod/v3/plugin.ts:16-76, zod/v4/plugin.ts:16-76, zod/mini/plugin.ts:16-76. Walker fallbacks in v1/walker.ts:136 and zod/{v3,v4,mini}/walker.ts also don't check it.

So both plugins silently ignore definitions: false. The reproduction in this issue only happens to show request/response/webhook schemas being generated because the reporter dropped definitions: false into the config — but in their stackblitz, the requests/responses/webhooks: false settings should be working. If they're not, I'd want to see the actual generated output, because the gates in shared/operation.ts and shared/webhook.ts look correct.

Fix shape

Three small gates need to be added in valibot and the three zod dialects:

1. v1/plugin.ts (valibot) and {v3,v4,mini}/plugin.ts (zod): wrap the parameter / requestBody / schema cases in if (plugin.config.definitions.enabled).
2. Sub-flags: shared/operation.ts should additionally gate each request part on plugin.config.requests.{body,headers,path,query}.enabled rather than only the umbrella requests.enabled. (Lower priority — the umbrella flag covers the common case.)

Reconciled the two earlier statements. Both are true: requests/responses/webhooks flags ARE honored by the per-operation walker, but a separate component walker (parameter/requestBody/schema IR events) emits reusable-component schemas unconditionally because definitions.enabled is never checked. That's what the reporter is hitting. Also corrected my earlier claim that api.createRequestSchema short-circuits on requests.enabled — it doesn't. Posted clarification on #3883.

Both are true — I was sloppy with the word "respected" in the previous summary. Let me be precise.

The two emission paths

Valibot/Zod produce schemas through two independent walkers, and the requests/responses/webhooks flags only gate one of them.

1. Operation walker (shared/operation.ts, shared/webhook.ts) — iterates per-operation, emits layer schemas named v...Body / v...Headers / v...Path / v...Query / v...Response / v...WebhookRequest. This IS gated by requests.enabled / responses.enabled / webhooks.enabled (lines 17, 87, 16).
2. Component walker (v1/plugin.ts cases parameter / requestBody / schema) — iterates #/components/parameters/*, #/components/requestBodies/*, #/components/schemas/* and emits definition schemas named v<Name> (using the definitions naming template). This is gated by NOTHING. definitions.enabled is never read.

That second walker is what's biting the reporter. Their reproduction has reusable components (e.g. #/components/requestBodies/PetBody, #/components/parameters/PetId), and those keep emitting as vPetBody / vPetId even with requests: false, responses: false, webhooks: false, definitions: false — because none of those flags reach the component walker.

So:

• requests: false does work for the per-operation v...Body/Headers/Path/Query schemas.
• It does NOT stop vPetBody (from #/components/requestBodies/PetBody) or vPetId (from #/components/parameters/PetId).
• definitions: false is meant to stop those — but is currently a no-op.

From the user's vantage point that distinction is invisible: a schema derived from an OpenAPI request body still looks like "a request schema". My earlier "requests are respected" was technically true for path #1 and misleading for path #2.

Correction to my earlier comment

I also wrote that api.createRequestSchema / createRequestValidator short-circuit on requests.enabled — that's wrong. createRequestSchemaV1 (valibot/v1/api.ts:157) has no requests.enabled gate; it relies on querySymbol returning undefined for unregistered layers. When requests: false, layer schemas aren't registered, but compositeNode still iterates requestValidatorLayers and falls into the empty branch — so the SDK's requestValidator arrow gets emitted as a composite of empty v.object({}) per layer. That's a separate, smaller bug (cosmetic if you weren't going to call the SDK anyway).

Recommended fix

In each of valibot/v1/plugin.ts, zod/v3/plugin.ts, zod/v4/plugin.ts, zod/mini/plugin.ts: wrap the parameter/requestBody/schema event cases in if (plugin.config.definitions.enabled). That alone fixes the reproduction. Sub-flags (requests.body.enabled etc.) and the empty-composite-when-requests-disabled issue can come later.

What do you mean by definitions? is it "components.schema" part of openapi?

I just want the request schemas. I think it's because openapi.component.schema doesn't have any distinction. so generator is generating all of them.

There are only 2 solutions:

• We flatten the openapi spec before generating and get rid of component schema part. (risky for other plugins)
• We remove generated schemas that are unused by other schemas. eg. If user config has only requests enabled then generator should remove AppResponse and AppWebhook schemas.

P.S. I think whatever you want is already supported through low-level APIs, but I want to be clear on the actual use case. Maybe there's a legitimate bug, maybe there's something that could be improved!

In a way this isn't a bug. Because I think parser thinks of vCreateAppBody as request schema, vListAppsResponse as response schema and vPostNewAppWebhookRequest as webhook schema. Which are indeed missing when you turn off respective options.

It just doesn't cleanup the unused reusable components.
