That reminds me, I did try to make that directory in bash_script and got the issue with .pth files below

Then I added $ARTIFACT to PYTHONPATH and the install completed, but I couldn't use matplotlib from python without modifying the PYTHONPATH, and I found a bunch of other packages inside matplotlib/kaem/lib/... that the matplotlib setup.py script pip-installed....
