Split scrollback

When scrolling through history, split the screen to keep the latest messages in view. This would be something like the top 3/4 dedicated to scrollback and the bottom 1/4 for new messages. If there are no new messages, then there is no need to split the screen when in scrollback.

Another feature that could complement this is to not reset the unread marker until reaching the dotted line with the last read message.

I think this option is better than split scrollback.
