Here's a workaround in the meantime:

File.open(local_path, 'wb') do |new_file|
  file.download_to_io(new_file)
end

Working 2025-07-08 with:

google_drive (3.0.7)
  google-apis-drive_v3 (>= 0.5.0, < 1.0.0)
  google-apis-sheets_v4 (>= 0.4.0, < 1.0.0)
  googleauth (>= 0.5.0, < 1.0.0)
  nokogiri (>= 1.5.3, < 2.0.0)
