asset.car not created and some icon files missing

It makes the icon files but it seems to fail at asset.car creation:

Assets.car: AppIcon created
generate_appicon: AlternateIcon.appiconset doesn't exist - creating new icon set
Assets.car: AlternateIcon created
Assets.car: launch screen
Assets.car: actool
Assets.car: actool complete
cp: /Users/%user%/Documents/AIR-ImageScripts-master/.air-icon-generation-tmp/Assets.car: No such file or directory

And then the folder out structure looks very different than the example: it has icons but no asset.car and missing some icons

Check that you have been through the setup process and installed imagemagik, Xcode and the build tools.

Note you need a recent release of Xcode, we currently suggest using 14.

Hello, I have installed imagemagick and other dependencies on macOS Sonoma and XCODE 15 (no older versions allowed on Sonoma) and tried compile Assets.car and launchsreen
All icons are generated, launchsreen is created but Assets.car is not.
Can be problem in the new Xcode version?
I had to also modify the generate.sh file because of deprecated convert method. replace "convert" to "magick". Can you tell me please if it works with Sonoma Mac OS and Xcode 15?

I have installed all the dependencies mentioned at the tutorial.. But I suspect the incompatibility of xCode 15, because when I want to create Assets.car via xCode 15, I have to load 1024x1024 icon only (other one for launchscreen.storyboard) but no need to load smaller icon dimensions(e.g. 29x29, 72x72 and so on). So maybe this can be the reason why the Assets.car file is not created(all the separate icons are created correctly)

Can you check the update I've just submitted. I couldn't see any reason the old script wouldn't work with 15. It was running well in our tests. However I did do some minor updates with icon sizes and increased the minimum version to 12 so see if that helps you.

I had the same same issue with Assets.car: No such file or directory on XCode 15 MacOS14

I opened XCode - Settings - Locations - Advanced and checked Legacy

After this Assets.car was generated correctly, too

@GeneralVimes Good pick up, this setting changes the path where outputs go and we set this for all our extension development. Will add this to the documentation.

I'm having he same issue with Assets.car No such file or directory on XCode 16.2. command line tools show as version: 16.2.0.0.1.1733547573. I followed the advice above about checking the Legacy checkbox. That didn't work. I tried to run the script remotely and also cloned and ran it from there. No luck. I also tried running just the xcode actools, substituting the path information with the actual path. Nothing, so far, generates the .car file.

Any suggestions for Xcode 16.2?

I should add that everything else is generated just fine.

I'm running Sequoia 15.3 if that matters.

So.... I think this was an XCode update issue. When I first had the problem, no errors were reported from actool. Just that the generate.sh couldn't find the .car file. XCode must have had an update in the background because this morning, when I ran, I got an error from ACTool about no simulator. I checked Xcode and no simulator was installed which was very strange. An update must of removed it. So I installed it and now the script works just fine. There is no way of knowing if the first time 2 weeks ago there was no simulator and I didn't think of it to check. Maybe there was and there is a different issue. Which resolved itself with another XCode update and making certain the simulator was there.

So maybe an update to the instructions to make certain XCode has a simulator installed as something to check for problem troubleshooting.

Ah interesting, what could have happened is when Xcode updates it often doesn't install a lot of functionality until the first run (command line utilities, sdks, debug files and simulators). Will have to investigate if there's a way to detect this.

Leaving this as a note to future self or other users:
on MacOS 15.3.1 Xcode 16.3 the script initially didn't work with an error:
Assets.car: No such file or directory

Legacy was already selected in Code - Settings - Locations - Advanced

My case was:
Scenario 4 "The Xcode Command Line Tools may be installed or an empty directory may be present."

After removing the empty folder everything started to work
