Windows darktable does not export to a directory when used with gimp, it winds up in \Users\home

Describe the bug

I'm working in Windows for this problem; it does not exist in linux. I use gimp to open a RAW (nef) file. Gimp sends it to darktable for editing, and when darktable closes, it sends an exr file to gimp. Gimp cannot find the file, but I can find the file in my \Users\home directory. As an example, I found this darktable file: UsersjkherAppDataLocalTempdarktable_C2AAK3image.exr in my home directory. A close look reveals that there are no directories in the file name. \Users\jkher\AppData\Local\Temp\darktable_C2AAK3\image.exr would put the file where windows gimp would find for it. Can the directory markers "" be added?

Steps to reproduce

1. Start windows gimp and open a RAW (nef in my case) image file. Gimp will send it to darktable for editing. When darktable is closed, the file will be exported as an *.exr file for gimp to open.

2. Gimp cannot file the file, but it is in my \Users\home directory as reported above

Expected behavior

Darktable should export the file where gimp will find it.

It's a dual boot Intel 10th gen 16 core chip, 64 GB of ram and Nivida 3060 ti.

Are you using OpenCL GPU in darktable?

Yes

If yes, what is the GPU card and driver?

Nvidia 3060 ti. I keep the machine up to date, so the driver is the latest that windows as provided.

On the same machine running in linux, darktable has no problem exporting to /tmp and gimp opens the file without error.

When you used GIMP to open the raw, how did you specify the raw file name?

I use gimp to locate directory and file, and click on the file that I want. With windows, I get the file name (dsc_xxxx.nef) through a samba server that's on my main linux machine. It serves files that I see in windows on the Z: drive.

In linux I just use nfs to serve my other two linux boxes, one of which is dual-boot (linux-windows.) Darktable works great in linux, never skipping a beat. Windows is another story for darktable and gimp.

I just did a bit more sleuthing. Darktable does indeed create a directory in \Users\jkh\Local\Temp with the name darktable_XXXXXX. When I enter that directory, there is nothing in it. The file image.exr should be there, but it is not. Instead the pathname (without the directory slashes) is prepended to image.exr and I find that file in my home directory.

@john-k-h does this work with a previous version of darktable, 5.2 or 5.0?

I looked at the GIMP darktable interface and the code hasn't changed in more than a year.

I've tried to build darktable-5.0.x from git, and it crashes at

I've done the git submodule update --init.

I'm stumped. I'm open to suggestions and hints to get this built. I'm running slackware-currrent, so I'm pretty up-to-date here. Are there any old executables around that I can just install?

The 5.2.1 for windows works great. Gimp opens the file quickly enough and the exif data is preserved.

I'm a happy camper.

At least now we know where to start looking for what changed.

Maybe @jenshannoschwalm will know exactly but the interaction between GIMP & Darktable have changed and I'm not sure all version of GIMP are actually compatible with 5.5.x. What's your GIMP version?
