Just for clarification, this 'bootstrap' is the time it took the request from laravel to run itself to 'server-timing' middleware?

Yes, you are correct.

I looked into the package source and the bootstrap metric is the difference between the time PHP started processing the request (LARAVEL_START / REQUEST_TIME_FLOAT) and the moment the handle method of ServerTimingMiddleware begins executing.

So it essentially measures the time Laravel spent bootstrapping before reaching this middleware — loading the framework, registering service providers, resolving bindings, running earlier middleware, etc.

For this metric to be meaningful, ServerTimingMiddleware should be placed as early as possible in your middleware stack, before any other middleware that does significant work.
