Memory usage of caches is hard to control

Currently, it is not possible to set the caching strategies to respect a size (e.g. in MB) rather than a number of entries.
As the number of entries is a quantity that is both hard to estimate, and that is hard to link to the available resources, we might want to alter this behavior to take into account memory requirements instead.
