Refactoring Plan for server/index.js

Here's the proposed breakdown for refactoring the server code:

• 1. Project Setup & Dependencies:
  • Create directory structure: server/routes/, server/db/, server/middleware/, server/config/ (optional).
  • Install dependencies: npm install dotenv express-validator uuid winston (or pino).
  • Install dev dependencies: npm install --save-dev @types/uuid @types/cors.
  • Create .env file in root and add to .gitignore.
• 2. Configuration Management (.env):
  • Define PORT and DATABASE_PATH in .env.
  • Load variables using dotenv in server/index.js (or server/config/index.js).
• 3. Database Module (server/db/):
  • Create server/db/db.js to manage connection and export DB helpers (run, all).
  • Create server/db/initializeDb.js to handle CREATE TABLE logic.
  • Create server/db/termRepository.js for terms table CRUD operations.
• 4. Routing (server/routes/):
  • Create server/routes/terms.js using express.Router().
  • Move /api/terms route logic here, calling repository methods.
  • Mount the router in server/index.js.
• 5. Input Validation (express-validator):
  • Add validation middleware to POST and PUT routes in terms.js.
  • Handle validation errors (return 400).
• 6. Server-Side ID Generation (uuid):
  • Generate UUIDs in termRepository.js for new terms.
  • Remove id from POST /api/terms request body expectation.
• 7. Error Handling:
  • Update repository/routes to throw/handle specific errors (e.g., "not found").
  • Create centralized server/middleware/errorHandler.js.
  • Implement error middleware to log errors, set status codes (400, 404, 409, 500), and send JSON response.
  • Use try...catch with next(error) in route handlers.
  • Register error handler last in server/index.js.
• 8. Logging (winston or pino):
  • Create server/logger.js to configure and export logger.
  • Replace console.log with logger calls.
  • Add request logging middleware (optional).
  • Use logger in error handler and potentially elsewhere.
• 9. Main Server File (server/index.js) Cleanup:
  • Ensure index.js orchestrates setup (config, DB init, middleware, routers, error handling, server start).
