Support for client version 1.9

My son has asked me to upgrade his CanaryMod server to support the 1.9 client and from what I can see looking at the code, this will require code changes. Is someone already working on this or is this something I can work on with my son?

If it is something that we can work on, can someone point me at where we should start?
