Visual Ruby tutorial

Is there any Visual Ruby tutorial similar to other Ruby GUIs from novice to advanced level or better a video training course covering all these issues?

Hi asimakos:

Have you tried running VR and clicking on "Open Project" and trying all the examples? Those examples covers most everything you can do with it. You can also download the visualruby project itself. Visualruby is written in visualruby so it is a very advanced project to look at.

I tried to run the examples for Visual Ruby and unfortunately i have got an error (Windows 7 - x64). When i run an example inside Visual Ruby, suddenly Visual Ruby freezes and thus i could not see the entire code behind but only GUI.

Is there any option to use Glade designer and write code via Visual Ruby and how (any tutorial) similar to Qt Designer and PyQt via PyCharm?

I get a very similar "Could not load a pixbuf" warning on Win 7 x64, but in my limited testing it didn't seem to cause a problem. #42

Which example are you trying to run? I can try to recreate this here.

Also, which version of the cairo gem are you using? There are problems on Windows with versions before 1.15.3.

I was able to recreate this on Win 10 Pro x64. The steps were:

run vr
create a new project
(make no changes at all to the new project)
click the run icon

The new project program does not run (at least no window appears) and the Git Bash console shows the following warnings:

$ ruby -v
ruby 2.3.1p112 (2016-04-26 revision 54768) [i386-mingw32]

$ vr

(ruby.exe:199888): Gtk-WARNING **: Could not load a pixbuf from /org/gtk/libgtk/theme/Adwaita/assets/bullet-symbolic.svg.
This may indicate that pixbuf loaders or the mime database could not be found.

(ruby.exe:199888): Gtk-WARNING **: Allocating size to GtkBox 04269330 without calling gtk_widget_get_preferred_width/height()           . How does the code know the size to allocate?

I tried exactly the same test on Ubuntu 16.04, and the expected main.rb "Hello World" window appears, and no messages at all appear in the bash console

Please try updating to the latest version of visualruby, and let me know if this problem persists.

Hi Wayne:

First, thanks for discovering this!!!!

I added this dependency to visualruby:

s.add_dependency('cairo', '= 1.15.5')

now you just need to install visualruby 3.1.7 and the proper version of cairo will be used.

The problem was that gtk3 wasn't insisting on a specific version of cairo. Now it is forced to use the latest version. Try:

gem install visualruby

I've verified that this installs cairo v1.15.5
